Stilfontein, South Africa – Simon Gwenzi, a 22-year-old Zimbabwean national, was sentenced to ten years in prison by the Stilfontein Regional Court on Wednesday, 28 August 2024.
The sentence follows his conviction for multiple serious offenses, including unlawful possession of explosives, possession of an unlicensed firearm, illegal mining, and being an illegal immigrant in South Africa.
Gwenzi’s arrest stems from a disruptive operation conducted in February 2023 at the old Quest mine in Stilfontein.
The operation was initiated by a multidisciplinary team after receiving intelligence about illegal mining activities in the area.

The operation involved the Klerksdorp-based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, SAPS North West Airwing, SAPS North West Explosives Unit, Illicit Mining Task Team, Public Order Police, Klerksdorp Crime Prevention Unit, Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, and the Local Criminal Record Centre.
During the operation, Gwenzi was apprehended along with others involved in illegal mining operations.
The investigation revealed that he was in possession of dangerous explosives, an unlicensed firearm, and other equipment used for illegal mining.
Authorities also discovered that Gwenzi had entered South Africa unlawfully, compounding the charges against him.
The Stilfontein Regional Court, in handing down the sentence, emphasized the seriousness of Gwenzi’s crimes, particularly the possession of explosives and the illegal mining activities that pose a significant risk to public safety and the environment.
The court also noted the importance of sending a strong message to deter similar activities in the region.
