The ruling Zanu PF party has indicated that opposition leaders, activists, and human rights defenders arrested in the lead-up to the 44th session of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Heads of State and Government Summit may soon be released.
The arrests, which affected over 160 individuals, occurred as a precautionary measure to ensure the smooth conduct of the summit, which took place in Zimbabwe.
Zanu PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa addressed the media yesterday, downplaying the severity of the detentions.
He stated that the primary goal was to maintain order during the high-profile regional gathering.

“Now that the summit is over and was a success, those who were held as a preventative measure can be released. The most important aspect of a country is order,” Mutsvangwa said.
He further justified the arrests by labeling those detained as “deviants” who posed a risk to the orderly conduct of the summit.
“When everybody else is trying to put on a good show on a particular occasion, you decide to become a champion of disorder. You are a deviate. So if you are a deviate, you are going to be dealt with in the right way, which is to put you in jail so that you don’t create a sideshow which takes the attention away from the event,” he added.
Mutsvangwa’s remarks have sparked widespread debate, raising concerns over the legality of the detentions and the apparent misuse of state power by the ruling party.
The arrests were primarily based on allegations that the activists were planning protests to disrupt the summit.
As the situation unfolds, human rights organizations and opposition parties are closely monitoring the developments, questioning the justification of such arrests and the broader implications for civil liberties in Zimbabwe.
