Drama Unfolds as ZIFA Delays New Warriors Coach Reveal, Five Contenders Await

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has postponed the appointment of the new Warriors head coach, which was anticipated this weekend.

The interviews for five shortlisted foreign coaches will now take place tomorrow.

Initially, ZIFA’s Technical Director, Jethro Hunidzarira, had announced that the new coach would be unveiled this weekend, with a two-year contract to manage the Warriors.

However, the process was delayed as the association finalized their shortlist.

As of Thursday, ZIFA shortlisted Spaniard Gerard Nus, veteran German Winfried Schäfer, his countrymen Michael Nees and Antoine Hey, and Brazilian Marcio Maximo Barcellos from a long list of applicants.

These five candidates are set to be interviewed by a panel of experts from ZIFA, FIFA, and the Confederation of African Football.

FIFA is currently conducting integrity checks on the candidates, all of whom hold the UEFA Pro Licence coaching badge.

Despite rumors suggesting that interviews were completed and Schäfer was selected, ZIFA clarified that the interviews are still pending.

In a statement, ZIFA addressed the speculations:

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) would like to address recent inquiries and speculation regarding the selection of a substantive coach for the Zimbabwe national senior men’s team. We wish to clarify that interviews for this critical position are yet to occur. The shortlisted candidates have been informed, and interviews are scheduled for Monday, 22 July 2024.”
