Lephalale, South Africa – A Zimbabwean male national was apprehended on Wednesday, 19 June 2024, in the Lephalale policing area.
The arrest is in connection with tampering with essential infrastructure and possession of suspected stolen property valued at over R100,000.
The sequence of events began on Tuesday, 18 June 2024, at approximately 21:45, when vigilant security personnel at the Matimba Power Station detected an alarming situation.

While conducting patrol duties near the conveyor belt that transports ashes to an ash dump, they noticed that copper cables had been stolen. The security team immediately alerted the police to the incident.
Responding promptly, the police initiated a search for the unknown suspects by following the tracks found at the crime scene.
The investigation continued into the early hours of Wednesday, 19 June 2024.
At about 06:00 on Wednesday, police discovered evidence of the suspects burning the stolen copper at a nearby farm.
The scene revealed new and old burned wires, including remnants of protective shield copper wires, and smoke from burning copper, indicating the suspects’ presence in the area.
The police persisted in their search and, at approximately 11:00, spotted two males running in the bushes.
A chase ensued, resulting in one suspect evading capture, but his accomplice was apprehended.
The arrested suspect was found in possession of a school bag containing stolen copper cables and gloves.
Following the apprehension, an Eskom employee was called to the scene to assist with the investigation.
The suspect, whose age is yet to be determined, is facing charges of tampering with essential infrastructure and possession of suspected stolen property. He will appear in the Lephalale Magistrate Court soon.
